Country profile: Bulgaria

Bulgaria as a hub is an attractive proposition. The country offers an alternative transit route to Turkey via the Black Sea where companies can benefit from EU-streamlined legislation, and its interconnectivity infrastructure is well developed for hub traffic- there are 20 internet exchanges and 30 data centres active in the country.

Internally, Bulgaria over-indexes on several performance measures when it comes to digital infrastructure development and connectivity of society - its fast broadband and fixed high-capacity network penetration are both above the EU average, and its mobile speeds are the fourth-fastest in the world.

The country's data centre landscape, helped by large-scale tech outsourcing to Sofia and other Bulgarian cities, has been growing at a fast clip in recent years. This connectivity has been enhanced recently by the July 2023 completion of work to enhance fibre connectivity between data centre campuses, and Equinix recently finished expanding its facility in the Bulgarian capital.
